Kemble -
The server space is critical to DELL. They have good offerings, great field execution, and appear to be growing that business at close to 3 times the industry rate.

If they achieve a total run rate which averages out to 1000 servers a day by the end of '99 they will have pulled off a spectacular feat, growing at 3 times CPQ's rate and 5 times the rate of the industry. So far this year, they do not appear to be on that path - a yearly total of somewhere between 250,000 and 300,000 seems more realistic, which translates out to between 700 and 800 servers/day.

I think that they might achieve an actual run rate of 1000/day by the end of the year if they continue to be aggressive but that depends on a number of factors. CPQ grew their server business at more than 30% in 1H99 despite all of their internal turmoil, and they have great offerings for 2H99 including 8-way Xeon (where they have a slight advantage because they co-developed the 8-way chipset with Intel/Corollary) and appliance servers. They will continue to be tough to knock off in that market.

But my comments were really about the 4000 number - this is a greater unit run rate than the current output of DELL, IBM and HP combined. It seems like the sales lady must have been mis-quoted - it is just not possible for DELL to quickly grow unit volume by a factor of 8 in a very tough market.

Kemble:

Hi! As promised, I just wanted to give you an update on Dell and Nashville. I have been entertaining and meeting with clients from Nashville and CA all week. What a long week!

I asked all about the Dell plant at dinner last night. My boss is a little suspicious that I am so into Dell. :) So, I kept telling the people that my boss, is the real Market expert. It was pretty humorous. These people were all into Mutual funds. How boring.

Anyway, I wanted to know how well received Dell has been in Nashville. This is probably old news to most of us, but they said that the City gave tax credits to Dell to get them to come to Nashville. Nashville wanted Dell to move there and that caused a big fuss. Then when Dell got into taking the historical land, it got hotter. I am not sure... They built near the Airport, near one of the businesses that the company I work for owns. Was this historical land, for sure? The people around there are funny about their land. There are a lot of battlegrounds from the Civil War, so that is pretty sacred to them. I love history, so I can relate to bulldozing historical land.

Anyway, now that Dell is there, the issues should be over. They were very excited about having Dell in Nashville. I have not talked to a person who is apathetic about it. And, Nashville did not want a Starbucks either, because they have their own local coffee shop chain. But, they are finally building a Starbucks there too. I cannot tell you how slow moving this town is, but I have always thought that. They just resist change. But, Nashville is moving up in the world. I still would not want to live there, but let's hope many qualified people want a job at Dell in Nashville. I will keep you posted. That is my update!

I hope I get some other substantial info for you soon. I have several people listening for news for me. I will let you know. Have a great Friday night! LW
