There could be multiple opinions on that account. Significant portion of Yahoo's revenues is derived from advertising. Well, there is a new breed of players competing for the eyeballs. Not other "portals", but companies with rather different approach, those like NetZero or Alladvantage. I think these two should be discussed and their potential impact should be quantified. (For starters, NetZero provides free net access supported by a small ads-filled window on customers desktop. That window must remain on the desktop for the duration of the connection. The other one, Alladvantage, pays its customers for the time the ads-filled window is active on customers desktop.) There are others, and if not - there will be. These two are just an example of a real "portal" (for those who find their services attractive and subscribe.) Let me explain what I mean. I like Yahoo very much and visit it every day to check the mail, financial news and such other things, but they get my eyeballs for just a few minutes - I go to other places on the Web rather quickly. At the same time, alladvantage has it's "Viewbar" on my desktop all the time - 2 ads will be shown to me every minute no matter where I go. So all the Dells and Staples can be sure their wares will be seen. Alladvantage cost of one customer/hour is currently 80c, making the cost of each impression being around 0.67c. The break-even point then is around $6.70 per thousand impressions, while for the same thousand "portals" like Yahoo are charging anything from $20 to $40. Any way you slice it, this whole thing does not look good for Yahoo. Indeed, Yahoo has smart management and all, but there might be significant shift going on in how the ad dollars are spent on the net. Therefore uncertainty leading to re-evaluation. All this is just my humble opinion indeed. Still, I think it deserves to be discussed in greater details. I can back up the numbers, but I don't want to waist space on public board or being treated as alladvantage/netzero hypster, spammer or whatever. If interested, let me know, I'll post in private.
