Some questions from a real neophyte:
(1) Is OFDM a refinement of spread spectrum? What are the limitations of this technology? Initially, my reading suggested that OFDM in the 2.4 ghz. band would be subject to interference, from microwaves especially. Subsequently, it seems that spread spectrum minimizes the chance of degrading reception through interference. The question: is the processing gain of this technology inherent at other frequencies
or are there frequency bands at which it would be unusable/unwise?
(2) Could this technology be adapted, using multipoint transmission in an urban environment, for "last mile" technologies? Would this not increase the effective transmission range? Perhaps at different frequencies? Specifically, could it be used to increase cellphone/CDMA thruput and reception, or is this a mis-application?
(3) I guess the overall point is: where do the benefits of this technology end? Theoretically, we're looking at near fast-ethernet speeds soon, with inherent security, minimal interference, high efficiency bandwidth use, etc., etc. Maybe my question should be
"Who would NOT want or use this wireless technology?"
Apologies to all for these questions...perhaps my ignorance of this technology is causing me to overestimate its benefits. Would really appreciate it if someone could steer me right! Thanks, good luck to all.
