<Buy him a single athlon 650 next week. It will outperform the dual pentium 600's and save him a buch of dough.>

1) I already ordered the components.

2) I'm still not confident of the stability and compatibility of the Athlon platform, especially the motherboard. Last thing I want is to wait for BIOS or driver patches that won't come until at least a month from now.

3) With only "tens of thousands" Athlons shipped already at various speed grades, I'm sure I'll end up on the bottom of a long waiting list. And that's even assuming that 650 MHz will be immediately available this month in volumes.

4) There is no way on earth that a single Athlon 650 MHz will outperform a dual Pentium III 600 MHz when it comes to applications that can use the multiprocessing. My friend originally wanted to run a web page. He has since changed his mind, but not on the dual processor setup. (By the way, I'm only populating one of the CPU slots, allowing him to upgrade at his leisure.)

5) Athlon 650 MHz ($850) with motherboard ($150 maybe) is more expensive than a single Pentium III 600 MHz ($660) with dual Slot 1 motherboard ($150).

6) I'm an Intel employee for crying out loud! <grin>
