ALSO..why do we need the who started this thread when someone posts to the zero post on a thread

That's an easy one.

When you click on the thread title instead of the new message number on your bookmarked "Subject Marks" just under the gray line you see

Remove SubjectMark | Related Subjects | Don't show original post

Click 'Don't show original post' and voila, you dont see that post again.

"why do we need the who started this thread when someone posts to the zero post on a thread?"

Indeed. The "(0)" is usually clue enough. As I've observed before, those of us who use the system know such things. The problems start when those who design a system do not also use it on a regular basis. This has been a problem throughout the history of system design.

I suppose it could be added as an option:

___ Check here if you want to be notified when you are reading a post which is a response to the post originally posted by the person who started the thread by posting the "0" post.
___ Check here if you wish to be notified by email.
___ Check here if you wish to be notified by snail mail.
___ Check here if you wish to be notified by a statement posed as a question (who started this thread).
___ Check here if you wish to be notified by singing telegram.
