8/09/99 - RSA'S RC6 ALGORITHM NAMED AS FINALIST FOR NEW FEDERAL CRYPTO STANDARD PROPOSED TO REPLACE AGING DATA ENCRYPTION ST
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

SAN MATEO, Calif., Aug 9, 1999 /PRNewswire via COMTEX/ -- After more than a year of intense public scrutiny, RSA Data Security's RC6 encryption algorithm has been selected by the U.S. National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) as a candidate to enter the final round of testing and analysis to become the new federal Advanced Encryption Standard (AES). Designed by MIT professor and RSA Data Security co-founder Ronald Rivest in conjunction with RSA Laboratories, RC6 is now among a group of five candidate algorithms that NIST will examine more closely over the next 12 to 18 months to replace the current Data Encryption Standard (DES) which is now more than 20 years old. Like its predecessor DES, which has been widely deployed in Internet and banking systems over the past two decades, the AES is expected to become a worldwide encryption standard.

The focus of the NIST process will now shift to the inner workings ofthe algorithms to deeply study how they operate in order to judge their security, as well as their suitability for hardware implementation and other issues. RC6 has been extensively tested by cryptography experts worldwide in recentyears.

"We are extremely gratified to be among the final candidates for thenext- generation U.S. government advanced encryption standard," said Burt Kaliski, chief scientist at RSA Laboratories. "We applaud the atmosphere of openness and cooperation NIST has encouraged in this process, and look forward to continued collaboration as we enter the final stages of the development of thisstandard."

The National Institute of Standards and Technology's Information Technology Laboratory initiated a process in January 1997 to develop a Federal Information Processing Standard (FIPS) for an Advanced Encryption Standard (AES) incorporating an Advanced Encryption Algorithm (AEA). Starting with its own list of preliminary Minimum Acceptability Requirements and Evaluation Criteria, NIST has worked closely with the cryptographic community to develop these to final form, and continues to provide an open environment for the exchange of ideas and information.

RC6 is an optimized variant of the RC5 block cipher algorithm, also developed by Ronald Rivest, which has received considerable attention overthe past several years from cryptanalysts worldwide, and has been shown tobe virtually immune to all types of practical attacks, including the more advanced differential and linear cryptanalysis attacks, as well as brute-force key search attacks. With its 128-bit or higher key size, RC6 offers a considerably higher level of security than the current DES algorithm, which has been routinely cracked in ever shorter times as demonstrated by RSA's recent DES Challenge competitions.
