My computer seemed sluggish this morning. SI posts took about ten times longer to download. After cursing SI, ISP, Windows, and the birds perched on my phone line, I logged off and Shut Down my system.

After rebooting, everything's working fine.

Just wanted to share, PW.

P.S. I was fiddling with SystemDoctor to pass the time when establishing my connection and I closed SystemDoctor just as I opened Internet Explorer. Maybe I started an system's internal hissy fit by doing this. I have no desire to repeat the experience.

Been there, done that. <g>

There were a few AUTOEXEC.BAT's;

AUTOEXEC.BAT (Real file Windows uses)
AUTOEXEC.DOS (File Windows uses when it boots into DOS mode)
AUTOEXEC.BAK (some unknown backup)
AUTOEXEC.SYD (another backup created from an unknown program)

I checked the attributes, and they were fine. Standard archive bit, and nothing else. Since it's not a true system file, it doesn't get the read-only or hidden attribute.

There was nothing special in the .INI files that I could see. Besides, they should be independent of the AUTOEXEC.BAT and CONFIG.SYS

I did some registry checking, still nothing of consequence came up.

The two lines in question are a SET BLASTER command for the soundcard, and another program file from Creative Labs that no longer exists (I properly undeleted the program and directory).

I gotta admit, it has me stumped and is one of the strangest things I've seen in awhile.

Thank you much for the suggestions though. I hate to wipe the drive for something this silly. <g>
