The last corporation I worked at, erasing your tracks was all the rage.

And those who erased their tracks on the local machine might have felt better about "getting away" with something, and might have felt they were really hiding what they were doing. But, of course, they weren't. They can erase their personal history file. They can erase their cookies. But an audit log of every site they visited would still -- in most corporations -- be available on the corporation's proxy server.

If a systems manager at an outfit that forbids non-work-related internet surfing noticed thousands of hits to www.siliconinvestor.com, she might decide to watch the machines that hit it most often. The cookies won't make a bit of difference.

The lesson: When you're at work doing something you're not supposed to do, you should remember that, in most cases, all internet requests are funneled through one machine. An employer who wants to monitor workers need only set up complete auditing trail on that one machine.
