SMART Modular Technologies, Inc. Announces Availability of Intel(R) ValidatedRIMM(TM) Modules

RIMM Modules Adhere to Specifications Required by Intel and Rambus(R)

Validation Process Uses Standardized Procedures and Methodologies to Verify

Compliance to the Specification

Validation Builds on PC100 SDRAM Compliance Testing Process

FREMONT, Calif., Aug. 9 /PRNewswire/ -- SMART Modular Technologies, Inc. (Nasdaq: SMOD) announced today that its prototype Rambus RIMM modules have successfully passed all validation procedures required by Intel and Rambus. SMART's completion of the RIMM validation process helps ensure that RIMM modules manufactured by SMART and released to its customers have met critical specifications established by Intel and Rambus and such modules can be successfully implemented in Rambus-based systems.

SMART's RIMMs are manufactured using 100% validated components, which improves the yield of high-quality, high-performance modules. The requirement to use validated RDRAM(TM) devices is one criterion for providing validated RIMM modules. A number of other test parameters are required to have been measured before RIMM modules are validated. These parameters involve checking impedance, propagation delay, skew, attenuation, and cross-talk, which are critical to insure proper Rambus channel operation from component-level to system-level.

The RIMM module validation process builds on the common specification format started with PC100 SDRAM. SMART played an active role in testing initial and ongoing silicon compliance to common specifications. SMART was also recognized by Intel for its outstanding support in establishing PC100 compatibility. "SMART's current involvement in the Industry Enabling Programs for PC100, PC133 and RDRAM demonstrates our dedication to strict test procedures for measuring specification compliance across suppliers, thereby improving system performance for our customers and minimizing integration time of the much-anticipated Rambus technology," stated Arthur Sainio, SMART's Strategic Marketing Memory Manager.

SMART's RIMM modules that have been validated by Intel and Rambus include:

* MB Part Numbers

* 72MB SMH072RFS0D01

* 72MB SMH072RFS0D02

* 108MB SMH108RFS0D01

* 144MB SMH144RFS0E01

* 144MB SMH144RFS0D02

SMART continues to submit additional modules for validation testing.
