Actually, in the Reagan years, I read a few liberal columnists who were a bit nostalgic for Nixon....

I think it's because Nixon presided over HUAC. The press never forgave him even though it turns out McCarthy was right more often than not.

Michael Burke seems to think the press' hatred of Nixon goes back to when he called a rival, "the pink lady" but HUAC looks like a good starting point to me.
