I love Yeats, he is one of my favorite poets, but although it is beautiful, that poem, (to me) is also nonsense. Why should Hamlet be gay after killing or setting in motion the killing of his mother, his uncle and several friends and enemies? What joy devolves from watching the thing unfold again and again? Tragedies are endless. I think of that picture from Somalia of the little baby and the vulture- it was a beautiful picture- but how does gaiety transfigure it? In our humanity tragedy is tragedy, it hits us with the force of our common humanity. I do not understand how it can be otherwise- although apparently you do. I can't be sure that Yeats did, because poets write all kinds of things they do not mean at the deep hearts core.
