I object to the customization options being stored in the cookie. ... Why should I have to customize it each time I use SI on another machine.

I agree with what you said about storing preferences information on the server rather than in a cookie. You've highlighted the many advantages of having them stored centrally.

I, too, would especially like the elegance of having my preferences displayed wherever and whenever I log into SI.

I don't mind the use of cookies to keep track of new and previous users or their optional use (as is the case here) to store log-on information between sessions. I'm smart enough to figure out when I should and should not check the "Keep me logged in" box, and I appreciate the convenience of being automatically logged in when I'm using a personal account on my own machine.

By the way, in my message, I wasn't making any claim in regard to privacy of this system. I was asking someone who raised a general objection to cookies whether they'd be satisfied with a centralized store. It's mostly a question of attitude, and that's very hard to predict. Would those who are frightened by cookies be more frightened or less frightened by a centralized database of preferences? It's hard to guess.
