Today, the correct spelling is lightning;
lightening was in vogue in Middle English (1050-1475 A.D.)

Although the word "lighten", apart from meaning to "reduce the load or weight of and to make less oppressive etc.", also means

"to emit or display lightning",

lightning and not

lightening is the word used today to describe that

"sudden flash of light caused by the discharge of atmospheric electricity between electrified regions of cloud, or between the cloud and the earth".
