Methane carries that pesky carbon - and it is a fossil fuel. Burning methane directly is much more sensible than stripping off the hydrogen. This takes energy, and you waste more than half the molecule. And methane is safer and more storable than hydrogen.

Imo fusion is a red herring. It's MUCH harder to do and no cleaner than goin' fission.
