Interesting observations...Let me tell a story. A few years ago (less than ten), my wife and I had to go on a business trip to Richmond, only about 3 hours away, 2 from Washington. We stayed in a place that was filled with conventioneers for some Virginia heritage organization. For some reason, the hotel staff, waiters, and bar staff in the hotel took a big shine to us. Now, it is true that we get along well with such people, because we are friendly, but this was spooky, they really had warm feelings. I finally figured it out: most of them were black, and my wife and I were the only Northerners in sight. When we ordered we looked at them and smiled, perhaps made a joke; the other diners didn't even look at them; when we asked a question or for a special service, we acted like we were sensitive to the possibility that they were busy; the other guests just started talking without a "by your leave". It was subtle, and it was clear that the younger whites who also worked at the hotel got along with their coworkers fine, but it bothered me...
