The problem with labeling something elitist art-obviously- is that it implies that only a qualified few will appreciate it. And if you don't, then you must not be qualified or else you are making a big mistake. KInd of a Catch 22.

When someone like Kubrick enters the "pop" ring as he has done, should he then expect to be judged accordingly-- as "regular" art? In a way, since he was financed by the studio and agreed to let them do what was necessary to make the film R and marketable, should he then expect to be measured by different, more "common" criteria? His other films have been successful in both arenas, haven't they?

Do you remember when the boys' band was in the school talent contest?
THere was a woman-- I have no idea who she was- who got up and sang "Der Holle Rache" from Mozart's The Magic Flute, a wild coloratura piece that sounds very "operatic". Everyone sat there, either giggling or just embarrassed to death for her. BUt well, she had placed herself in this position. Somewhere else, what she did might have been high art, but in the high school auditorium it sure didn't work.
