Lasers have their problems. Let's take a biiiig toke off the glue bong and pretend we have the necessary energy density. The laser will be focused into a cavity and 1) either vaporize some stuff on the tush end of the booster or 2) ionize the trapped air. You got your choice of injecting metal oxide aerosol or nitrogen oxides into the whole atmospheric column. And the NOx from a reasonable (one kiloton delivered) launch will rival an atmospheric nuke test for atmospheric "chemistry".

I won't buy that for a dollar.
