You need to put this into perspective since PC sales were at a record clip last month: ************************************* Japan's PC Sales Decline in Unit Terms in 2nd Week of July August 9, 1999 (TOKYO) -- Japan's PC sales at large retailers of electric appliances in the second week of July declined in units sold, compared to the previous week. However, PC sales on a year-on-year basis remained extremely brisk, at about double the figure of a year earlier. According to the figures collected by GfK Japan Ltd., PC sales at 2,000 shops during the second week of July (July 12-18) declined 5.6 percent in volume and fell 3.0 percent in value, from the previous week. GfK Japan handles POS data of 55 volume retailers of consumer electric appliances. However, on a year-on-year basis (as compared with July 13-19, 1998) PC sales increased 108.7 percent in volume and 109.6 percent in value in the second week of July. The average sales price was up 6,067 yen to 224,253 yen from the previous week's 218,186 yen. (114.61 yen = US$1) The older models pre-installed with Microsoft Office 97 were almost fully cleared from shops. Most new PC models come with Microsoft Office 2000, and thus the average sales prices went up by 5,901 yen for desktop/tower PCs, and by 4,222 yen for notebook PCs, as compared with the previous week. The average sales prices are almost the same as at the beginning of June, when "summer" PC models first appeared in stores. As for sales in the third week of July, increases in both units and value are expected, due to the start of the summer vacation period and because a national holiday occurred in mid-week. GfK Japan collects POS data from 55 IT-related retail sales companies centering on high-volume stores specializing in home electric appliances. It covers about 3,200 stores (as of April 1998) throughout Japan. In cooperation with GfK Japan, Nikkei Market Access provides weekly reports of PC sales in terms of volume and value. The sales data has been based on the same 41 companies (with about 2,000 stores) since April 1996. The number of PCs sold at the 2,000 stores is estimated to comprise about 10 percent of gross domestic shipments, and when limiting the sales to retail sales channel, the share comes to about 25 percent of such shipments. nikkeibp.asiabiztech.com
