<Mani, if the Athlon comes out at 650MHz next week (not likely), do you really think that Joe Public will pay a whole lot more for an Athlon than he is willing to pay for Intel's 450MHz PIII CPU?>

Craig, to be fair, AMD supporters were asking the exact same thing when K6-2 was making headway into the retail market, and people were trumpeting, "No one needs anything faster than a K6-2."

That slogan has since changed to "No one needs anything faster than what AMD can deliver."

Craig,
RE:"Mani, if the Athlon comes out at 650MHz next week (not likely), do you
really think that Joe Public will pay a whole lot more for an Athlon than
he is willing to pay for Intel's 450MHz PIII CPU?

Will retail buyers pay far more to jerk up their 70fps Quake scores to a
100fps test result that they can not see? And what portion of the public
actually edits 100MB Photoshop images?

Beyond the techies who visit Sharkey Extreme and Anand each month,
does anyone actually care? And, how many of those budget-minded
techies will soon trash their overclocked 300MHz Celerons for anything
that costs real money?

IMHO, the answer to these questions will determine AMD's future."...

Apparently the public does and will pay for MEGAHERTZ....and a powerful FPU. Believe it or not. As I've suggested so many times, the
scalability of the Athlon is the key. Thank goodness for AMD they saw it a couple of years ago.

Frankly I am a little surprised that you are asking me this question, considering how often we have talked about this.

AMD needs the high performance to get into the business market. Business marker will pay a very high premium for a bit extra. Consumers on the other hand mostly care about value and MHz. If people choose PIII over Celeron, they will choose K7 over them all.

You raise some good questions. The answer however is straightforward: Commercial systems.

I have been saying for a while that AMD has to move to business systems to be successful. IMHO, we are getting to a point where there is going to be a serious divergence in the business and consumer marketplace. Consumers are more likely to move to a PCOAC or a PlayStationII kind of platform and business are likely to stay with server centric platforms.

Athlon, you gotto admit will kick butt anything that is out there in the commercial space. Now, it is a question of penetrating that segment.

Whatever the future, there is jeopardy to only one chip player on this path and that is not AMD. The beauty of the situation is that AMD is priced for failure - it is easy to beat expectation (easy does not mean guaranteed). What are your thoughts?
