Maybe that Half-Life demo is like the Crusher Quake 2 demo - very cpu dependent. What else would explain why the Athlon does so well?

Half Life has more triangles than Q2 (even though the engine is the same). Read Ace's Athlon review--it's the best one out there (haven't read Anand's yet) and it explains this issue exactly.
