You are correct. This type of statement is found in most 10-Ks, prospectuses, and similar documents. The only thing here that I don't recall seeing before is that they got the information from the transfer agent. I wasn't aware that transfer agents kept that type of information. I know that if a company asks a brokerage for a list of beneficial owners (and I assume this would be done through the transfer agent), the brokerage is obligated to give them the names unless the owners have asked the brokerage not to. I would assume that from this information, the transfer agent could estimate the number of beneficial owners.
