Along with Staples, Office Depot, et al downgrades and downdrafts is MCSC, Miami Computer Supply Corp, which is tanking with the sector despite spectacular growth and accretive acqusitions. I've invested in SPLS, MCSC, IKN and done very badly indeed. Really thought that selling office supplies in this environment would be like shooting fish in barrel. Trouble is that sales and profits aren't the same.

Gotta admit, though, that MCSC intrigues me. It's in my home town and I've read about it for a few years. Specializes in smaller office sales and niche in computer projector equipment, conferencing.

Retailers in the Doghouse

Thanks, Carl, for the background. It doesn't make sense to me, either, so this may well be a good buying opportunity.

One thing I do know is that sales of office supplies in August and September should be good. Why? Because the fiscal year for the federal and many state and local governments starts October 1. Tens of thousands of offices nationwide will be in a hurry to spend what is left in their budgets for office supplies -- or else lose that money. Many public schools are in the same boat, not to mention the back-to-school sales of notebooks, calculators, pens, etc.
