MDU Communications Announces Unique Digital Satellite and Internet Service Project

RICHMOND, British Columbia--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Aug. 12, 1999-- MDU Communications Inc. (OTC BB:MDTV - news) announced the first Canadian agreement to provide a unique hybrid Star Choice digital satellite television and MDU's high speed internet service to western Canada's largest multi-dwelling development.

``Subscribers will be able to upgrade their television service with a personal selection from up to 150 digital satellite delivered channels including premium movies and pay-per-view services for up to 40 percent less than they pay for cable now,' said Gary Monaghan, Vice President of Marketing at MDU. He added, ``we are looking forward to providing over 1200 new potential customers with the opportunity to realize the full benefit of the Star Choice digital satellite service and our new high speed Internet service.'

``Residents are looking forward to getting more service for lower cost as well as having more choice than with standard cable service,' says Bart Hendriks, General Manager of Wynford Realty Group that manages the Residences of Woodcroft, a six-tower, 1222-unit property in North Vancouver.

``Building owners, managers and developers are responding very positively to this powerful combination of direct-to-apartment digital receiver technology with the addition of our new high speed Internet service,' said Sheldon Nelson, President of MDU. Using 3Com Inc. technology, this new high speed Internet service is expected to deliver internet access at up to 350 times faster than a 28-K modem using standard telephone lines.

Mr. Nelson added, ``we look forward to deploying high speed Internet services to this and many other properties we currently serve.'

MDU enters into long term service agreements with building owners, strata councils and other multi-dwelling buildings and then installs, upgrades and maintains state-of-the-art equipment at no cost to owners or subscribers. Nelson estimates there is a potential market of more than 2.2 million multi-dwelling units in Canada.

``We expect to add new subscribers at a fast pace because consumers now have a digital quality, competitively priced, better alternative to old-fashioned cable service without negative option choices,' Nelson stated.

Indicative of the interest in MDU, the company reported an additional 15 properties signed access agreements in the month of July, and 19 more properties signed letters of intent with the company representing in excess of 5000 new potential subscribers once service is deployed.

As a nationally authorized Star Choice System Operator, MDU gives subscribers more than 150 channels, flexible programming choices, digital quality sound, pay-per-view events, movie channels and High Definition TV-ready capability. The successful June 1999, installation of digital satellite TV and high speed Internet service at the 236-room Hilton Vancouver Airport Hotel points to the future for other new MDU Communications' delivered services for consumers as well.

With more than 12,500 subscribers, MDU Communications is the premier supplier of digital satellite television programming, equipment and new technology services to residents of multi-dwelling units including hotels/motels, apartment buildings, condominiums, universities, gated residential communities and remote work camps.
