I've never heard of a "vendor independent" computer. Is that one you don't buy from anybody? It just appears?

"..A properly designed multi-node vendor independant back-end architecture would be superior to a single E10000 box; especially if your
running your business on a box. "

I believe this is an appropriate rule of thumb for many ISP's who prefer small footprint rackmountable Ultra 2's and soon Sun Flapjacks - if one breaks, throw it away - and its easier to isolate applications by physical machines if your outsourcing or hosting someone elses applications anyway. However Ebay uses multipe Sun E10k's as database servers and win nt servers on the front end for the search engine. I dont believe you can replace the larger systems with smaller clustered systems - especially nt systems which dont offer any scalability in a clustered configuration - just 2 node failover - never mind the fact that they dont scale well beyond a few cpu's.

<< In a vendor independant multi-node config they would have continued to be up and running. >>

How's that exactly?
