There's a difference in believing in a conspiracy, and believing there's a conspiracy against myself in particular. The first is simply realism, the second would clearly be paranoia.

Judging by the almost daily fines slapped on various brokers/dealers by the SEC for price manipulation, fraud, misrepresentation, etc, I'd say that the question is not whether there is a conspiracy, but how deep it runs- and more importantly, have we reached the point where nobody cares? As long as AOL goes up 10% every day, a lot of people choose to look the other way. Yesterday a poster mentioned that Mary Meeker herself was issuing "quarterly goals" that a company she helped underwrite had to meet, but not exceed. If true, that is outright fraud.

I used to live in the south. The "old boy's network" is The Rule of big business down there. People who never lived and work there would likely say it's impossible for leaders of business and industry to commit widespread bid fixing and favortism when a bunch of old southerners get together and trade favors and drinks every few weekends.

And hey, there couldn't possibly have been a worldwide conspiracy to fix prices on the entire planet's vitamin market. That's just crazy.
