I know it may sound like a joke but there are quite a few respectable historians that take exactly that view of the Black Plaque. The reasoning starts out exactly that way plague decimates Europe, wages benefit. Prior to the plaque there was an oversupply of labour giving the 'negotiating' edge to the established powers. Afterwards there was a tremendous shortage of skilled labour. Those skilled workers which survived had the negotiating edge. This started a process which led to the strengthening of institutions such as guilds and the growth of towns which provided for more centralized and efficient commerce. The ultimate result was the Renaissance. So as strange as it may sound that statement is arguably true. We now return you to your regular programming <g>
