CoSine Communications and VeriSignPartner to Simplify Public Key Infrastructure for Network-basedVirtual Private Networks

August 9, 1999 10:42 AM
REDWOOD CITY, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Aug. 9, 1999--

Partnership Enables Service Providers to Bring High-value, Network-based VPN Services to Market More Rapidly

CoSine Communications, the leading provider of managed IP service delivery platforms for Business IP Service Providers, today announced a partnership with VeriSign VRSN , the leading provider of Internet trust services, that will simplify the delivery of secure, network-based VPN services for Service Providers who do not want to build their own PKI infrastructure.

VPN services, such as intranets, extranets and Internet access, require PKI to authenticate and safeguard the communications between customers, users and partners over public IP networks. The CoSine IP Service Delivery platform with VeriSign's managed services enables Service Providers to offer VPN services while outsourcing the management of the digital certificates and related security functions.

Service Providers using the CoSine solution can offer these secure value-added IP services to tens of thousands of enterprise networks simultaneously, providing each subscriber with the authentication and privacy needed to protect mission-critical applications. Services such as encryption work with PKI to secure and isolate each VPN connection from the other VPN connections that travel over the Service Provider's IP network.

"Partnering with VeriSign is the latest step in our strategy to integrate market-leading IP services into our open platform," said Dean Hamilton, president and CEO, CoSine Communications. "VeriSign fits perfectly into this strategy, since PKI is absolutely essential to creating a VPN. And because VeriSign offers a managed services solution, it's ideal for the Service Providers that do not want to take on the burden of managing digital certificates and other PKI functions in house."

Using CoSine's IP Service Delivery Platform and VeriSign's services, Service Providers can confidently offer enterprise subscribers managed, network-based IP services that are secure and customized to their specific business requirements. Additionally, Service Providers that have an existing relationship with VeriSign can leverage the same certificate authority architecture to bring new IP services to market more quickly.

"We have responded to our customers' needs by investing significant time and resources to determine the essential integration and infrastructure components needed to rapidly roll-out secure business-to-business and business-to-consumer communications and transactions," said Richard Yanowitch, executive vice president of VeriSign. "Our new partnership with CoSine makes it even easier for Service Providers and their enterprise subscribers to meet the rapidly growing need for secure network-based VPN solutions and further expands the market for e-commerce, intranet and extranet services."
