VIA KX133 Chipset for Athlon announced.

VIA Apollo KX133™ Chipset Rides
AMD Athlon™ Processor's Fast Bus
200MHz FSB / PC133 Memory / AGP 4x /
ATA-66 Shift Performance Capabilities to
Uncharted Territory

Taipei, Taiwan, Aug. 10, 1999 - With today's
introduction of the VIA Apollo KX133™ core logic
chipset, VIA Technologies announces support and
endorsement for the AMD Athlon™ processor. VIA's
most highly advanced chipset architecture to date, the
VIA Apollo KX133 delivers to AMD Athlon
processor-based platforms the advanced performance
benefits of a 200MHz front-side bus, PC133 memory
support, AGP 4x and ATA-66.

"VIA is extremely excited to extend our collaboration
with AMD through our support for the AMD Athlon
processor," said Wenchi Chen, president and CEO,
VIA. "VIA believes that the combination of the
seventh-generation advanced designs of the VIA
Apollo KX133 and AMD Athlon should set a new
standard for x86-level desktop performance".

"AMD is pleased to work closely with VIA on
next-generation chipset solutions, and we are excited
that VIA is planning to produce an optimized chipset
for the AMD Athlon processor," said Dana Krelle,
AMD's vice president of marketing. "The combination
of the seventh-generation AMD Athlon and VIA's
forthcoming chipset is planned to provide a powerful
platform for system manufacturers who want to deliver
industry-leading performance."

Advanced Performance Enabling Features
The VIA Apollo KX133 chipset unleashes the
unprecedented x86-level performance capabilities of
the AMD Athlon processor.

VIA's latest chipset enables and delivers the immediate
performance impact of the AMD Athlon frontside
system bus architecture, based on Alpha EV6
technology. Operating at 200MHz, the AMD Athlon
system bus delivers twice the throughput of
previous-generation Pentium III™-based systems
running at 100MHz FSB.

The VIA Apollo KX133 chipset delivers first-to-market
support for the high-throughput Advanced Graphics
Protocol, AGP 4x. In combination with the AMD Athlon
processor's highly-advanced floating point-unit (FPU)
and enhanced 3DNow!(tm) technology, the KX133's
support for AGP 4x provides the end-user a
photo-realistic 3D experience suitable for the most
robust 3D games and software environments.

Further exploiting the AMD Athlon processor's
performance potential, the VIA Apollo KX133 chipset
provides the extra benefit of a 100/133Mhz memory
interface. Cost-effective and widely available PC133
SDRAM and VCM memory types boost the AMD Athlon
and AGP4x computing capabilities via enhanced
throughput to CPU and AGP buses.

ATA-66 support rounds out the performance features
of the Apollo KX133, amplifying overall system
performance through faster hard disk transfer rates.
The Apollo KX133 supports the full range of ATA-66
disks presently available.

A two-chip set, the VIA Apollo KX133 consists of the
VT8371 North Bridge and VT82C686A "Super" South
Bridge.

Key Features
Supports AMD Athlon processor
200MHz front-side-bus AGP 4x
Supports up to 2.0 GB of 100/133MHz SDRAM
and VCM memory types

Why did INTC pop during the day?

I was surprised by Intel's price being up for much of today in a down market. AMD was coming off a 20% 2 day gain so it was no surprise to see it give back a little.

But despite some negative news regarding price cuts and some product delays, INTC was up for much of the day. What do you think was going on, was it the stock purchase program? Was the expected AMD news even better than what was finally received? (most observers seem to have seen the AMD news as somewhat better than expected)

Any guesses as to what could have been going on?
