JLA, For what it's worth: Neal Boortz is also a member of the ABA. This is Neal's comments the day Clinton arrived:CLINTON IN ATLANTA TODAY by Neal Boortz Aug. 9,1999boortz.com Bill Clinton will be in Atlanta today to make the keynote address to the American Bar Association. You just MUST get your hands on today's issue of The Wall Street Journal and read the editorial entitled "Lie to a Court, Get Invited to Address the ABA." It's devastating. For those of you who can't find the editorial, here are some highlights. First of all, the WSJ highlights the charter purpose of the ABA, to wit: (as they say in legal circles) "to promote throughout the nation the administration of justice and uphold the honor of the profession of law." Now --- has Clinton fulfilled this ABA goal? Not only no, but HELL no. Here are the words of Federal Judge Susan Weber Wright as she imposed sanctions against Bill Clinton. Judge Wright said that Clinton "violated the Court's discovery orders by giving false, misleading and evasive answers that were designed to obstruct the judicial process." She said that she imposed the sanctions on Clinton "not only to redress the misconduct of the President in this case, but to deter others who might themselves consider emulating the President of the United States by engaging in misconduct that undermines the integrity of the judicial system." So, there you have it. In the opinion of a federal judge, Clinton "undermine(d) the integrity of the judicial system" and attempted to "obstruct the judicial process." And THIS is the man the ABA chooses for their keynote address? Now --- some of you may say "but he's the president! How can the ABA not invite the president?" Consider Richard Nixon. He's a lawyer, and he was also engaged in a scandal. During the Watergate investigation the ABA never invited him to speak to their national convention. In fact, in 1973 the ABA adopted a resolution condemning Nixon for his role in Watergate and demanded "prompt and vigorous disciplinary" action "be taken forthwith." At the time of the ABA resolution there had been no finding in any court of any wrongdoing by Nixon – unlike Clinton. So, with Nixon, a conservative Republican, the ABA demands disciplinary action. With Clinton, a leftist Democrat, the ABA invites him to deliver the keynote address. This stinks, folks. As a lawyer I am outraged at the actions of the ABA. The legal profession deserves better than this. This country was founded upon and stands on the rule of law. If the rule of law decays freedom and the protection of individual rights will be gone --- forever. The one certain Clinton legacy will be his contempt for and degradation of the rule of law --- and for this he gets honored by the ABA. Lawyers should be embarrassed.
