Case-study lessons aplenty in that particular never-ending series of screwups. When SGI goes belly up or is bought for scrap next year, hopefully at least a good book will come out of it, of the "How Not To" or "Corporate Strategy for Idiots" variety.

They actually had some good added-value things going there for a while...they were becoming the brand to beat in Hollywood for graphics work, for example, and they had good stuff from Cray. Good operating systems innovation, good file systems, super graphics, good all-around performance.

Some execution problems and what do they do? Focus on what they're good at? No: put themselves into the hands of Bill G. and start trying to differentiate a commodity over which they had no control.

Can you imagine the management meetings that must have led up to today's "flurry of press releases"? A bunch of guys without a clue in the galaxy sitting around looking at each other wondering what to do? Mommy.

Gives me an idea for a sequel to "The Blair Witch Project" that takes place on a computer company campus instead of the woods. Maybe "The SGI Mission Statement Project"?

Regards,
