Analog Devices is Clear Market Leader in ADSL
NORWOOD, Mass., Aug. 16 /PRNewswire/ -- Analog Devices, Inc. (NYSE: ADI - news) today announced the company's leadership position in providing silicon solutions used to implement ADSL (Asymmetric Digital Subscriber Line) capability in equipment worldwide, based on recent analyst reports from Dataquest. In addition, Allied Business Intelligence also cites ADI's leadership in ADSL in a recent report. ADI's products are used in both customer premise equipment (CPE) Internet modems and central office (CO) equipment, and can be configured for either full-rate or G.Lite ADSL operation. Analog Devices is currently the only IC supplier that can supply complete field-proven, end-to-end interoperable ADSL chip set solutions, along with discrete analog components, including analog front ends (AFE) and line drivers.

Dataquest Inc., a unit of GartnerGroup Inc. (NYSE: IT - news), ranked Analog Devices number one in sales of ADSL chip sets in 1998, according to a report entitled, ''DSL and Cable Modem Chip Markets Race Ahead,'' published on April 26, 1999. The report stated that ADI's AD20msp910 full-rate chip set is designed into more than a third of the unit shipment market in 1998. A more recent report published on July 12, 1999 entitled, ''Worldwide xDSL Market Share and Forecast, 1999,'' indicated three of the top five companies worldwide are customers of Analog Devices' ADSL solutions. The report also concluded that Analog Devices' customers captured 60 percent of the market share in 1998.

ADI's leadership position was confirmed by Allied Business Intelligence in its recently released report, entitled ''The ADSL Broadband Solution, Subscribers, Equipment, and Chip Sets, US Market Analysis.'' Citing ADI's wide number of design wins with leading modem/telecommunications product manufacturers, ABI said it expects ADI to be the market share leader in 1999.

Jerry Fishman, President and CEO of Analog Devices, said, ''As an industry leader in signal processing, Analog Devices was one of very few companies with both the high-performance analog technology and DSP capability needed to develop complete ADSL solutions. We were early to realize the significant potential of offering products that would enable high-speed access to the Internet, and among the early proponents of the DMT standard, which is rapidly emerging as the dominant standard for ADSL deployments. Our strong technology capability and our early commitment to the ADSL market has resulted in ADI's products being used in more than 80 percent of the world's xDSL systems.''

''ADI is reaping the rewards of patience, as it has had presence in the market since its inception,'' said Gregory Sheppard, Forecast Analyst and Vice President of Dataquest's Semiconductor Group. ''The company has established a wide base of customers that spans the equipment landscape for DSL, including central office switches, digital loop carriers, routers and analog modems.''

ADI in ADSL

ADI's family of AD20msp9xx ADSL chip sets and AD80xx family of line drivers as well as AFEs provide the foundation for modems providing high-speed Internet access and multimedia services that transmit Internet data up to 25 times faster than today's fastest analog modems. With a customer base of more than 50 companies, Analog Devices' xDSL solutions are designed into a broad range of ADSL equipment, from client modems and routers to CO voice and data switches, DSL Access Multiplexers (DSLAM) and Digital Loop Carriers (DLC).

Siemens to supply ADSL technology to XinJiang PTA in China

For the trade press

Siemens has been awarded a contract by XinJiang PTA in China to supply ADSL subscriber access technology. Thanks to the ADSL network, XinJiang PTA (post and telecommunications department in XinJiang, western China) will be able to offer numerous multimedia services like fast Internet access, high-quality videoconferencing, telemedicine, telelearning and video-on-demand (VoD). The first phase of setting up the network, which covers 15 central offices, will start in November 1999. Siemens is supplying its XpressLink DSLAMs and the ADSL SpeedStream 3041 network adaptor cards for connecting broadband users (CPE, Customer Premises Equipment) from Efficient Networks.

Siemens is supplying the ADSL connection technology as part of the contract to set up an ATM network for the XinJiang region. Quick response to customer inquiries and highquality futureproof solutions were key for this contract. It is estimated that the world market for ADSL (Asymmetric Digital Subscriber Llne) will reach a global volume of over ten billion US dollars in the next five years. XpressLink is the Siemens product for Central Offices (CO). The DSLAM solution (Digital Subscriber Line Access Multiplexer) supports ADSL user interfaces for up to 8 Mbit/s downstream over existing copper telephone cable. With Speedstream 3041, Efficient Networks is supplying the ADSL NIC (Network Interface Card), a cost-effective solution for connecting subscribers, where the modem card can be plugged directly into the PC. Siemens has taken share in Efficient Networks last year.
