Timelord - Good points. I've often had some of the same thoughts myself.

However, I can't imagine Greenspan raising rates solely because of oil and gas inflation spurred by OPEC - wages, yes. Higher prices in these commodities would slow down certain aspects of the economy down making a rate increase a little less likely. It's a really tough call because any hard landing would force Greenspan to immediately lower rates - especially with elections coming up. Raising and lowering rates is always political, but I imagine he'd have more pressure put on him if things started to sour.
