I2, we should indeed worry about the possibility of weakness in the economy in the not-too-distant future. a rise in rates will ultimately put pressure on stock prices, and declining stock prices will reign in the consumer, who is particularly ill-prepared for an economic downturn. there is a deep-seated belief now that stock market gains are a birth-right and that it is o.k. to take on debt essentially beyond one's means since the perpetual rise in stock prices guarantees the debts won't become a problem. therein lie the seeds of a sharp downturn once the easy money leg gets kicked away, as it now seems to be. the virtuous circle will turn into a vicious circle at some point.
