Yeesh. I had previously heard the number 15,000 thrown around, which I'm sure includes everything from herb sellers to the local university's research site, but even when you weed out (no pun intended) the tangential ones, there are at least hundreds of credible health sites that are out to eat WebMD's lunch. So that brings me to the story in the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, as reported by Bloomberg News today, that WebMD plans to spend more than $200 million on advertising over the next 5 years according to their chief marketing officer. My somewhat convoluted suggestion: make sure you've got the cash now, guys, because you'll have a tough time doing secondaries to raise it later on with your stock price at 2 after smart money gets a look at your losses due in part to spending all that money on advertising.
