The 20 posts rule has been there quite a while. If you talk to the SI people they freely admit that it is enforced inconsistently. If someone is posting good, responsible, helpful stuff they don't care how much they post. (For example, when Adaptec crashed, some of us who followed and held the stock were posting dozens of posts trying to figure out what was going on, and that was fine and good.) But the rule is there so they can enforce it when things get out of hand. Usually, I understand, it's a gentle reminder to cool it for a while, but if somebody is really out of hand they have the power to suspend them immediately for a cooling off period.

Briefly revisiting the topic of appropriate content on this thread, I knew I recalled that the Bard had something to say on this, and this morning I found it.

Taming of the Shrew (a very appropriate play for some of the "gentler" sex on this thread! <g>) Act 1, Scene 1. Tranio to Lucentio:

Only, good master, while we do admire
This virtue and this moral discipline,
Let's be no Stoics nor no stocks, I pray,
Or so devote to Aristotle's checks
As Ovid be an outcast quite abjur'd.

I couldn't have said it better myself! <bg>

In case we haven't addressed this publicly before, this is probably a good place to do so.

The "20/6" rule isn't an absolute. It doesn't get invoked immediately when someone posts exactly 21 messages in a 6-hour period.

We generally invoke that rule when someone is harassing a thread or person through sheer posting volume, or when they're posting excessively frivolously.

If someone's making serious, non-abusive contributions to discussions, we really don't care how frequently they post.
