In law, the basic principle of responsibility is foreseeability. If you can reasonably foresee that a direct result of your actions will be injury or death, you may bear some responsibility. It appears that we are agreed that responsibility CAN move back up the chain of events. Now the hard question arises; how far back, and on what principles? Personally, I think that foreseeability is a good start. From that standpoint, for example, the great vineyards of France are unlikely to foresee someone's getting totally sloshed on their wines and living a life in an alcoholic haze. (On the other hand, remember Ripple? Hmmm.)
