FPIC Insurance cannot explain stock drop

NEW YORK, Aug 11 (Reuters) - Specialty insurer FPIC Insurance Group
Inc. said Wednesday it did not know the reason for the sharp drop in the price
of its stock in midday trading.

Its stock tumbled 12-1/4 or more than 32 percent to 25-1/2, becoming the leading net and percentage loser on
the Nasdaq market.

FPIC, which reported higher earnings the previous day, told Reuters it did not plan to make a statement later in
the day, either.

The fall in its stock began on Aug. 6, when it closed 2-3/16 lower at 46-3/8, off from a year high of 50-3/4 on
July 7.

On Tuesday, the Jacksonville, Fla., provider of liability insurance for doctors reported an operating profit of 71
cents per share for the second quarter, up 37 percent from 52 cents for the same period a year ago.

Revenues were $39.4 million against $30.5 million.
