I had never thought of the 980 in terms of amplification in the context of the EDFA, but it should have been obvious (or is now <g>). Going out farther on a limb here, I also didn't appreciate that the FBG would be a component of the EDFA "System", since that I thought that the EFDA function was more in the sense of continuous "regeneration" of the photonic wave, or waves in a DWM system. I thought that the FBGs would tend more to function as "routers" for the multiplexed wavelengths in DWM'ed light flowing through the pipe.
