You are right about the long term but there may be more to the original email than that meets the eye. Currently Intel is doing whatever it is to keep the BOM costs attractive as a solution. (CPU+Chipset+Motherboard+Memory).

I gather that Intel is pushing PIIIs with 820 with PC133 support (yes, that was not a typo, it is PC133 - expected in September) to reduce the pricing pressure on PIIIs and pitching this up against Athlon's high motherboard costs (at least for the near term).
