AAPT adds to CDMA spectrum for A$25 mln
SYDNEY, Aug 10 (Reuters) - Telecoms group AAPT Ltd said on Tuesday it has acquired additional CDMA spectrum through the purchase of OzPhone Pty Ltd, a unit of Leap Wireless Inc (Nasdaq:LWIN - news), for A$25 million.

AAPT said the purchase would increase its cover for the mobile phone technology by about about three million people to a total population of nearly 10 million people.

The OzPhone spectrum covers 5.86 million people in Brisbane, Perth, Cairns, Mackay, Maryborough, Grafton, Tasmania, regional West Australia, remote Queensland and remote West Australia.

``This is a valuable investment for us as it increases both the breadth and the depth of our existing CDMA (Code Division Multiple Access) coverage,' said AAPT group director, strategic development, Steve Picton.

AAPT would double its capacity in Brisbane and Perth from five to 10 megahertz, and already had 10 megahertz in Adelaide, he said.

Its spectrum now covered all of Queensland and Tasmania.

``This increased capacity in our network will enable us to improve our network efficiencies as well as provide high levels of mobile data and Internet services,' Picton said.

``It also provides us with the backbone to carry high-speed third generation wireless data services in the future.'

AAPT won rights to CDMA spectrum in auctions in May last year, covering about 6.5 million people in areas including Adelaide, Perth, Canberra and regional South Australia and Victoria.

The company said last month it had narrowed its choice of an equipment supplier to roll out the network, but had not made a final decision.

AAPT shares were down nine cents at A$4.66 a share in afternoon trade.

*OzPhone and Australasia, Chickens and Hawks* Yes, AAPT, which bought Leap's Australian business OzPhone for 3 times what Leap spent [according to a news release] has a CDMA plan. AAPT is owned [mostly if not totally - not sure which] by Telecom New Zealand Limited which a week or so ago announced their plans to instal a cdmaOne 800MHz network in NZ to start service in 2001.

Which is hopelessly late since Vodafone with GSM will have gained a huge jump on them in that time. Vodafone is gaining customers very quickly. Telecom/AAPT plans to have Australasian cdmaOne and cdma2000 roaming [though they probably still think they'll use VW40].

Vodafone seems likely to be the Globalstar gateway operator in New Zealand, though probably not for a year or two or three since Globalstar isn't doing anything to get marginal gateways up and running. Vodafone already is the operator in Australia. Therefore they will be able to use Globalstar as a lever against Telecom/AAPT if they don't allow cdmaOne operators access to it.

Australasia is going cdmaOne/cdma2000 but with some legacy GSM networks.

PS: Ramsey how about 'getting' those one-liner posters in the past few posts. Caxton too! Also, I've noticed how you have metamorphosed from a Little Chicken to a Talon-Tearing Super Hawk over a very short time. The gestation period was a matter of weeks. Sort of like a transmogrifying Mogwai which has got wet and gone all Gremlin on us. Is the sky falling?

I might add that I have sent the talon-pulling thread enforcers with pliers around to your place [up there in the eyrie overlooking Mighty Q! stadium and Qualcomm Way] for a gratuitous breach of thread rules.

You writing about the 'penalty box' and stuff like that is an obvious attempt to inject baseball terminology into the thread, which is expressly forbidden. We shall flog you too.

floggolf, hmm, mirrors of themselves. Speaking of golf, will we have a golf tournament after the 2000AGM? Golf! Reducing your handicap is like flogging a dead horse. I wonder if golf and flog are derivatives? Wonder where Bill Frezza is.

Look at these posts!!!!
Are you going to allow "I disagree"? Just who IS in charge around this joint?
