RE:"That explains why AMD hasn't broken through 20. They can brag about
reaching 650 MHz, but not a single Athlon at any speed has reached the
hands of Joe Consumer yet. PC Rag is saying that the new Compaq and
IBM models featuring Athlon won't be available until September, and
only for direct order."...

Without the last couple of AMD dissapointments (ran way up on the announcement of the K6, the K6-2 on .25u leading to an actual profit in 4 qtr 98 then couldn't follow through) the Athlon would have sent AMDs stock price well north of 20 by now. Seems the Analysts have finally caught on to AMD. Problem is, the Analysts are usually wrong and AMD might get it right this time. This Athlon launch is a bit bumpy, new generation chip, chipset and motherboard not withstanding.
September is probably right for any volume of Athlon boxes but they are here and they are real, certainly nothing near the K5 blunder.
Unless Intel over cuts prices, running scared of losing market share, Athlon won't hurt Intel too much in Q3. Then again, Intel threw away a
bunch of money in Q4-98/Q1-99 when they reacted to the K6-2 while
AMD simultaneously had serious production problems with the CXT core.
