I agree with you, on all counts. Intel didn't know that AMD was going to help them out with the CXT core. Intel didn't know that AMD would have trouble scaling the K6-III above the K6-2, that Athlon would be a month and a half late.
Just so happened that Intel left some money on the table, in retrospect of course.
Intel takes AMD seriously, although some here don't. They are a great marketing company and have plenty of money. I expect them to use it to try to weather the coming storm. Still, they no longer have the luxury of the most MHz and fastest chip...things have changed.
