As a career military man, you should remember that most dictators ease their way into power (as did Hitler), and never do have to face the armed anger of 25 million citizens, or any other similar opposition. Here's how it could happen. One evening, your TV stops for a Special Report from Washington. An army general appears: "My fellow Americans. My name is General John Q. Smith, and it my sad duty to report that President William J. Clinton was placed under house arrest today by the U.S. military under my command. While I pray the charges turn out to be untrue, at present it appears that President William J. Clinton has committed numerous acts of treason against the United States and was preparing to suspend the Constitution by both Executive Order and force of arms. We acted to avert the loss of our democracy. Substantial evidence exists that, in return for campaign support and other payments, President Clinton has supported and abetted actions by agents of the People's Republic of China to abscond with vital U.S. nuclear secrets. He has also engaged in a conspiracy to conceal these acts from the American people. We also have uncovered evidence suggesting an active role by President Clinton in the death of Vincent J. Foster, former Presidential counsel, as well as former Cabinet Secretary Ronald W. Brown. Again, these charges are unproven. But, if proven, these acts constitute not only murder, but treason. There is much more yet to be investigated, and these other matters--many even more alarming--will be vigorously investigated in the days and weeks to come under the special auspices of a tribunal composed of military and civilian investigators." "Given the gravity of this situation, and the threats to the lives and well-being of the American people, we were forced to take these gravely serious actions. We are now under martial law. We intend fully to respect the dictates of the American Constitution, the grandest document ever conceived, and which we have acted only to preserve. Due to the disability of the President, and the Vice President who also is being held under house arrest pending an investigation into his possible complicity in these matters, House Speaker Dennis Hastert will assume the Presidency, and will coordinate the details of the current state of emergency with members of a special armed services task force that I shall head. We ask for calm, and we pray for divine guidance, and for the welfare of and safety of all of the American people. Good night, and God Bless America." Of course, Hastert is only a figurehead--Gen. Smith is in charge. Armed insurrection by 25 million people??? No way. Smith would get broad support, and would continue to receive the popular support of many, many armed people who would perceive his next edicts as absolutely necessary to the preservation of the Nation and the Constitution . Smith Brigades would arise in every American city and hamlet, and would continue in their loyalty as emergency measures require the suspension of such things as freedom of speech, and of assembly; and against unreasonable search and seizure. Indeed, Gen. Smith would warn again and again that liberal agents "are acting even now to restore the Clintonistas to power, and to deliver the country into the hands of the enemy." Many, many of your armed 25 million people would be merrily along for the ride---well-meaning, but duped. Eventually, Smith Brigade members could bear arms; all others would have to surrender their arms. Those who don't are "presumed to be supplying the Clintonista forces with arms", and subject to arrest. No, Sir, the takeover wouldn't be as clumsy or as openly hostile to the American people as you envision. We would be delivered into dictatorship at the hands of a cynical, power hungry, self-proclaimed saviour. That's how Hitler, Mussolini, and Stalin did it, and that old play book gets used again and again. There would be no armed insurrection--it would all happen with much help from the deceived, the duplicitous, and the fearful. Just as it always has.
