NEWS FLASH: FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: Cmgi, Albonia (4:00 p.m. CDT) There are unsubstantiated reports that a shadowy group using the name "Market Forces" earlier today abducted soothsayer Heidi Rednik from her fortress mansion situated on a verdant hilltop commanding a high view of Doldrums, the gritty working-class community below. She is said to have been transported by the forces to an abandoned coal mine shaft, where she was dumped. Cmgi city leaders had earlier used the mine extensively, selling the output to all comers in neighboring communities under an open market barter agreement. Indeed, Cmgi had planned to expand the mining operations until it was only recently discovered that the mine was located above a sink hole. The city fathers had capped the mine with a silk net, but the net was apparently too fragile to save Heidi, according to workers engaged in her recovery. The sinkhole itself only today exhibited signs of deepening, and no one really knows if it has a bottom. A Market Forces unofficial spokesperson laughingly reported that Heidi's last words, echoing from the depths of the Cmgi mine as she plummeted down the shaft were, " ...tell my friend Annie I'm going to miss our dinner date tomorrow!" Stay tuned for an extensive update on the News at 11 as events continue to unfold. FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

God help us all

Well, the operating earnings are never a eye-popper. The goosing comes from selling shares in the venture holdings. And this simply hasn't been a good quarter to do so. Therefore, I suspect we'll have earnings like last quarter -- which disappointed short-term thinkers.

I don't have a long-term problem with waiting for a better climate to cash in some of the venture holdings, but I'm not in the majority on that issue.
