The very same time these boomers were forming their life long skills, the Chinese counterparts were ploting to do others in so they could survive. Paranoia can be tough habit to break <sigh>

Great point!! And one of the likely lasting social impacts that was exacerbated by their one child policy. All of these families struggling to ensure that THEIR only begotten is the one who dominates the others.

I wonder how that one child policy will play when they decide to go to war and see literally tens of thousands of family trees "pruned" on the battlefield.

Regards,

Ron

I think the Beijing-Taiwanes relationship goes beyond pragmatic understanding. It is one of those "losing face" ego trip thingies.

I think this is true, which is one reason why I found Lee's recent remarks so odd. For some time Beijing has been quite content to let Taiwan go its way as a functionally independent state, as long as all parties paid lip service to the "one China" illusion. This situation was at least as advantageous to the Taiwanese as to the mainland, so it seems odd that they would choose this moment to rock the boat.

I assume that there are factors involved that we do not know about. A friend of mine, overseas Chinese, suspects that both sides are making hay out of the controversy, and will press for concessions from the US in return for letting it quiet down. He may be right.
