About those "buy, hold and forget" type of stocks.
No one here has mentioned WCOM, a stock I've played for a long time, many different ways, never losing a dime each time.

Very few mutual funds concentrating on growth or telecom or other common criteria DON'T own this stock. IBD shows that WCOM is a top holding in many mutual fund portfolios.

Two days ago, when WCOM was at a 1999 low of about 73, heavy buying/block trades were underway as evidenced by ThomsonInvest.com site, which focuses on institutional buying. On the other hand, very little "heavy",institutionaal-type buying went on with WCOM yesterday. Perhaps such buying had already been done the day before.

I picked up [at 73-1/2] the second half of a position I started at 82-3/4 when I noticed all the big selling seemed to have stopped. Obviously, any fund or individual who wanted to sell during the recent tanking had adequate opportunity to do so, before I went out on a limb and bought.

The stock seems to be really cheap right now and it's on an uptrend. It's up past 77 already.

WCOM has just been upgraded from a buy to a strong buy by Wachovia, [admittedly not a big-name recommendation] but has a target price from the "big" names on Wall Street that ranges from 120-135. This is not to say the stock couldn't tank at any time, particularly if our fragile stock market tanks as a whole in the next week or so. However.......

If you consider the holdings of WCOM (which include UUNET), its breadth in the global market, its competitive position vs. any other major telecom player....you probably don't have to worry about paying anything under $90 if you are willing to hold it a while. This stock hasn't split a bunch of times like some other telecom stocks have, so that needs to be taken into consideration when looking at the price.

This is my humble opinion, of course, and one must do one's own research.....this is one buy/hold/forget stock that will result in profits if you resist the urge to take those profits too soon. I, of course, have been stupid and ALWAYS take my profits too soon. :))
