Just a few of the things I look for are:

1) What does the daily market chart look like? Uptrend, downtrend.
2) How is the volume doing on up days, down days? A strong market should typically rally on heavy volume and decline on weaker volume.
3) How does the market open / close? A strong market should typically close the day near the high of the day. The level of the close is a decent indicator of where professionals think the market should be. The open is more related to where amateurs feel the market is headed. A strong market will open lower/unchanged and rally to close near it's high. During recent weeks, the market has been doing just the opposite (opening strong and closing at the low). Yesterday and today reversed that pattern... we'll have to see whether it continues.

This is just a start, I'm sure others will have a much more extensive list of ideas. But for now, it's bedtime on the east coast!
