Value America Launches Solution to Close the 'Digital Divide'

Updated 11:41 AM ET August 17, 1999
Value America Partners with US Wired to Enable All Americans Unprecedented Computer and Internet Access with Affordable Prices and More Accessible Financing

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va., Aug. 17 /PRNewswire/ -- Value America (NASDAQ:VUSA), the world's leading online superstore, today announced the launch of an innovative program to close the "Digital Divide". In coordination with US Wired, Value America will provide computers with Internet access in one affordable package supported by an innovative credit service that enables parents without a credit card or a flawless credit history to purchase a high-quality computer system for their children. Complete systems including computer, monitor and ISP are available for purchase at the newly launched US Wired/Value America E-store located at valueamerica.com/uswired, va.com/uswired, uswired4ed.net or by calling 1-888-222-8026. Value America's unique ability to offer this computer solution results from its convergence e-commerce approach allowing buyers without a computer the ability to purchase via telephone.

The package includes a full-featured, multimedia 350MHz Proteva PC with 15 inch monitor, 32MB memory, 6.4GB hard drive, and 40x CD-ROM all with one- year warranty and 24-hour technology support for 39 installments of $24.95 a month. This solution requires no down payments, security deposits, shipping costs, long-term ISP commitments, full-time on-screen advertising or hidden costs.

In support of this program, Value America has launched a private label credit card issued in conjunction with Associates Finance. The Associates Finance/Value America credit system will make it easier for people who do not have established credit histories or a credit card to finance this offer. This credit alternative will help to close the technology gap by giving more people access to the information and technology that they might not have been able to afford previously. Individuals not wishing to finance their Proteva PC/ISP package can purchase their computer package in full for only $699.

To further enhance widespread access to technology and the Internet, four-percent of revenue generated from additional purchases at the US Wired/Value America E-store will be donated to the school of the customer's choice. These donations will help America's schools develop the resources and tools needed to prepare students for today's increasingly "connected" society.

"As computers and the Internet become the principle mechanism through which we communicate, learn and gather information, it is important that we grant everyone access to these tools," said Value America Founder and Chairman Craig Winn. "Our Proteva computer offering coupled with our Value America finance card will help close the Digital Divide by putting technology into the hands of people who have literally been shut out from the Information Age."

Mr. Winn continued: "We believe this is the first opportunity for many parents to acquire a computer, monitor and Internet service at this low a price, with no money down and without an existing credit card. Value America is leveling the playing field by making computer and Internet access available to those who must not been left behind."

Brian Lee, Co-Founder of US Wired, said: "The US Wired/Value America partnership offers a safe means of raising funds for schools. With four percent of the additional revenue generated on the US Wired/Value America site being donated, kids no longer have to go door to door to raise funds. They and their families can go online to buy a wide range of affordable products while generating money for their school."

The US Wired/Value America E-store was launched on August 16, 1999. US Wired for Education is the nation's premier education Web site offering a more complete collection of tools and resources for parents, teachers and schools than any other destination on the Internet. US Wired for Education is based in Albany, NY and has a staff of certified education professionals that maintain, monitor and update the US Wired Web site.
