stevedhu, good evening (pardon, pz, for jumping in)

A pulling unit is essentially a small no-frills workover rig, almost always truck-mounted, which is especially constructed to run or pull tubing and completions into or out of the well.

Because tubing is typically much lighter than drill strings, the rig equipment can be scaled down to meet the task. Instead of a full workover rig (which has pumps, drillpipe or a work string, mud/brine pits, etc.) which is typically mobilized to address other hole problems or perform remedial procedures, the pulling unit is usually the cheaper alternative if all you're doing is running/pulling tubing.

Regards, and Good Luck.
