If events occurred as described in your scenario, the general would be more suspect than the president. Conservatives who bemoan the gutting of the military can take heart in knowing that there are circles within circles, so to speak, inside the military. These groups are stridently anti-socialist and have sworn to do whatever it takes to preserve constitutional government. There is a quarterly publication called The Resister, which is put out by retired and active duty soldiers. They sub-title their newsletter The Political Warfare Journal of the Special Forces Underground. It costs $35 a year to subscribe or you can get a sample copy for $10.
